Street Life Through a Lens

Nikon releases new photography series of Barcelona to inspire amateur street photographers

Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 4th October 2017 – Nikon is releasing an exclusive photography series today after setting Spanish photographer, Ibai Acevedo, the challenge of shooting five different locations in one day, using five NIKKOR prime lenses, in his native Barcelona.

Barcelona’s urban landscape is a unique juxtaposition of beautiful beaches, Modernistic architecture and its gothic past. The photography series includes striking imagery of Barcelonetas, Sagrada Familia, Las Ramblas, The Gothic Quarter and Tibidabo. Each was matched with a specific prime lens to show how they can elevate street photography from the ordinary to the exceptional.

Ibai shot the image series using the Nikon D750 and the following NIKKOR prime lenses:
- AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.4G ED: The wide angle of this lens and shallow depth of field made it the perfect choice for capturing Barcelona’s famous beach. The lens allowed Ibai to capture the ambience and atmosphere of Barcelonetas without distortion, offering sharpness even in bright light.
- AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G: The lens stands out for capturing shallow depth of field and wide angles simultaneously, while also being effective in low light. This is demonstrated in Ibai’s shot of the famous landmark, Sagrada Familia reflected in a nearby lake, which could be mistaken for a painting.
- AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G: This lens was perfect for singling out a beautiful shot amongst the sea of people that swarm Las Ramblas. The lens’ aperture delivers an excellent depth of field, offering brilliant texture with blur at the back of the image.
- AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G: This is the ideal portrait lens, which captures extreme detail. It allows for a smooth bokeh effect, focusing the eye of the viewer. In the Gothic Quarter, these capabilities were put to the test.
- AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G: The low light capabilities of this lens easily adapt to changing light conditions which made this lens the optimum choice for capturing both the church the sunset over Tibidabo.

Commenting on his experience, Ibai Acevedo said, “For me, street photography is about taking a risk and trying to capture something unusual or transient. I constantly have my eyes open and always aim to seize any opportunity that might arise. It’s really important to be able to improvise – after all, the beauty of photography is when you can capture something unique to that moment. Elements such as varying light and weather conditions offer endless challenges and opportunities for photographers, but while you might be in the right place, with a creative composition – without the right lens, there is only so much you can achieve.”
